Archaeologists are people that investigate human/Mobian activity throughout history, most often by uncovering ancient artifacts and relics from bygone civilisations.

Archaeology, the study that these people partake in, appears to be more popular on Planet Earth than it is on Mobius, although it has also been observed in such far-flung locations as Shanazar and Rune.

Shining Force

At a certain point in Earth's future, the kingdom of Rune had undergone a massive transformation, with the history of the world seemingly forgotten. A new civilisation had been built on the ruins of the old one (our present) and relics from this time were locked away.

Eventually, the King of the land commissioned an archaeological dig underneath the town of Ribble. The ruler, a Zeonite, was one person keen to see the return of Zeon from his forced exile and began work on finding ways to make this possible. He hired four skilled excavators to search beneath the town's buildings, hoping to find something powerful enough to destroy the seal locking Zeon away. Some time into the dig, Trevillion and a fellow archaeologist discovered a door, labelled with "ancient writing" (actually our language) that they could not decipher. Unaware that it actually read "No Admittance to Unauthorised Personnel. Level 2 Clearance Required", Trevillion's friend forced open the door, allowing Trevillion to squeeze through. With the light of his torch, Trevillion was amazed to discover that he had stumbled upon guns, tanks and other weapons left in storage from another time.

The King learned of this discovery and wanted the weaponry for himself. For the good of the Zeonites' cause, he personally lent his signature to a Zeonite letter, ordering that the archaeologists cease work on the dig, immediately. Trevillion was initially aghast but, upon storming out of the caves with his team, vowed to ger revenge on the Zeonites. The crew were not seen again.

Shanazar

A group of Shanazar residents, dressed in desert-coloured clothing, were investigating the Pyramid of Aggro when they were attacked by the building's guardians, the Mummy Boys. Fortunately, Sonic the Hedgehog and Amy Rose were in the area and fended off the villains, although Amy was forced to save Sonic from a potentially-fatal blow. The archaeologists were grateful for the heroes' intervention.

Mobius

Archaeology has not become a major study on Mobius. Much of Mobius' history was peaceful, with the vast majority of the population living without objects that could be buried. Ancient civilisations like the echidna tribes and their possessions were eventually confined to the Floating Island, where Knuckles the Echidna and Porker Lewis were left to uncover new technology and old temples.

On the surface of Mobius itself, a cancelled story called "The Flood" was due to focus on two archaeologists investigating the ruins of the Aquatic Ruin Zone. A flood barrier was set to break, trapping them inside the Zone with rising water levels. The story was to see Tails enter the area and attempt to save the civilians, but he would fail to rescue one of them. The surviving historian would blame Tails for his failure, despite it being out of his control.
